Green Guide For Health Care

The Green Guide for Health Care (GGHC) is the first quantifiable sustainable design toolkit integrating enhanced environmental health principles and practices into the planning, design, construction, operations and maintenance of healthcare facilities. This guide has already played an important role in spurring development of healthier building materials and gives the healthcare industry a leadership role in bringing health issues to green design.

The GGHC has been vetted by scores of public commentators and is sponsored by NYSERDA and the Healthy Hospitals for the Environment (H2E) - the joint pollution prevention project of the American Hospital Association, the Environmental Protection Agency, Health Care Without Harm, and the American Nurses Association.

With Version 2.0, released in the Fall of 2004, the GGHC has begun a pilot project to refine the Green Guide through engagement with design teams working on the boom of healthcare projects now dominating the building market. HBN is working to inform and educate healthcare institutions about the Green Guide and encourage its adoption.
