Intern - Chemical Hazard Data Systems

Healthy Building Network (HBN) is a Washington, DC-based 501(c)3 nonprofit with a mission to transform the building materials market to advance the best environmental, health and social justice practices. HBN has led the transparency movement in green building with leading edge policy, research, data systems, evaluations, and collaborations with like-minded organizations.
HBN is seeking an Intern to assist with our chemical hazard data systems this summer. 

This position is funded, in part, through a grant with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency. 

Responsibilities:

The intern will work under the supervision of the Manager of Chemical Data Systems, Michel Dedeo, to aggregate and standardize data on chemical uses, hazards, and exposures. 

1. Become familiar with HBN’s Chemical Hazard Data Commons, software and protocols used to maintain and expand the data. Complete all training, education and readings; proficient enough to train new users.

2. Network with manufacturers, perform user interviews to understand their data needs and train them on how to address their green chemistry challenges with these tools. Complete 3 user interviews or trainings; present summary of results to HBN.

3. Compile and vet chemical hazard and function data, write programs to process and validate the data, perform quality control, and help integrating the data into HBN’s public-facing tools. Possible projects include:

Intern will be expected to add 1-2 new data sources to tools and fill 4-5 chemical compound groups or equivalent.

Because this position is funded, in part, by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, ideal candidates will work and reside in Minneapolis-Saint Paul, MN, however, elsewhere in Minnesota is also acceptable.

Salary:

40 hours per week June through August; $20 per hour; Work remotely (with occasional times at coworking location)
